The Massey Ferguson Ultimate Refurb: The Next Steps
30th August 2022
Since it was announced that they had won first prize in our AGCO #VinToWin competition, UK farmers Nigel and Robert Bowyer have waved goodbye to their 18-year-old tractor which has clocked up more than 18,000 hours of cross farming work and taken receipt of the loan vehicle.
With the first prize being a total refurb of the Bowyer’s MF 5455, the MF team, along with expert partners from Michelin and Quicke, have been hard at work at the MF facility in Beauvais, France starting the process to completely refurbish the tired old machine to pristine, shiny new factory standard condition…
The Bowyer’s tractor was purchased from a local dealer 18 years ago and has been lovingly taken care of on the farm, and taken back to the dealer for larger repairs. This care and attention have paid off, and when the tractor arrived in France to be surveyed and diagnosed by our team of experts, they declared it to be in reasonably good condition for its age.
Testament to this is the fact that the loader arm was able to be refurbished & repainted, rather than replaced. The entire team have fully immersed themselves in the project: thoroughly examining each element of the tractor in turn, checking the condition of all systems, and replacing any parts showing signs of wear. All to ensure the tractor is ready to handle the next 18,000 hours of work back at the farm!
The story so far...
Machine Diagnosis
A tractor of this age which has done more than 18,000 hours of crop and livestock farming requires some serious diagnosis. 100 hours to be exact – resulting in the identification and ordering of more than 1000 new spare parts.
The Gearbox and Cab
Following delivery of a brand-new cab complete with new harness and packed with shiny new parts, it’s time to start the intensive gearbox restoration...
Fixing the Tyres
When it comes to tyres, our expert partner for this Ultimate refurb has the answers: Michelin. With the tyres on this machine reaching the end of their life, watch our experts discuss exactly what’s needed in terms of replacement and why, as well as how maintenance and correct tyre pressure are key to a longer product life, the highest safety standards & excellent performance.
Loader Arm Restoration
For its age, the loader arm of Robert's MF 5455 is in surprisingly good condition. Unsurprisingly, the wear items are not! This video shows the #VinToWin team partner with #Quicke technicians to replace them all: from hoses and rings to shafts and many, many more…
